MOMBASA
The oldest and second biggest city in Kenya and is built on an island covering an area of about 296 sq km – land and water. The city was originally a center of Arab traders of the 11th century primarily exporting slaves and ivory. The port is still a leading trading center in the coastal region. The city is mainly influenced by Arabic cultures and this is obvious with the food, dressings and architecture. During the 20th century, the Portuguese, Oman, Zanzibar and Great Britain governed the port.
Fort Jesus
Fort Jesus is located within the island city of Mombasa. It is the Mombasa's most popular tourist attraction. The fort, located along the coastline near the Old Town, is a monumental piece of architecture that was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. Here you have a chance to see some of the cannons used in war and visit different rooms within the fort. Some of the rooms were used as prisons, other as stores. A visit of the fort will give you a chance to learn more on pre-colonial times.
Mombasa Tusks
These tusks are located at the city centre on Moi Avenue. The Mombasa "Tusks" are symbolic representations of entrance into the heart of the town. The tusks were built to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth to the town in 1952, as they lay directly on the path from the port to the town. Ivory was considered to be an exquisite commodity during the time, and in essence the tusks were meant to embrace the Queen and the British Empire into the town and within its social structure.
Old town
This is adjacent to Fort Jesus and the town faces the ocean as the Fort. Old Town" is the part of Mombasa that is reminiscent of the days when the Arabs exerted a heavy influence on the town and its culture, and especially in the architecture and language [Swahili] You will enjoy a walk in the narrow streets.
Haller park/ Bamburi Nature Trail
This Park is the largest animal sanctuary in Mombasa. It is Located just past the Kenyatta Public beach next to the Bamburi Cement Factory, the Park boasts an enormous variety of animals, reptiles, insects and botanical gardens. Walking along the trail is the ideal way to look at the various animals. It was previously a barren piece of land that had been stripped of its resources through limestone mining and was redeveloped through reforestation and conservation efforts, and is now a habitat for a large number of animal species.
Mamba Village
Mamba Village is situated in Nyali just close to your Hotel and is the East Africa's largest crocodile farm. A tour of the farm starts with a movie on the life cycle and behavior of crocodiles, followed by a comprehensive tour of the rest of farm, and ends with the highlight of the day: a spectacular scene of blood-thirsty crocodiles fighting for food during feeding time.
Excellent cuisine is available at the Mamba Restaurant, and the house specialty is superbly grilled crocodile meat. You may buy s ouvenirs as a reminder of the visit at the Mamba Souvenir shop located within the village.
South coast [Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve]
You may also decide to head South Coast to Kisite Mpunguti. The drive is with a ferry cross at Likoni. You then head further deep to south. This marine Park is found off the Kenyan coast, 75 miles south of Mombasa. This Marine Park and Reserve is each day increasing with a number of new fish species and corals. There are currently around 250 varieties of marine fishes, and over 40 varieties of coral species documented. Mpunguti and Kisite, which jointly gained its status as a Marine Reserve and Park in 1978, actually consist of the Inner and outer Mpunguti Islands and Kisite Island. A dhow transports you over to the shallow marine reserve from the coastal mainland, where you have the opportunity to witness the clarity of water and awesomeness of diverse number of marine life. At Kisite Mpunguti you have a chance of enjoying view of marine life and taking pictures in the clear water. While having a dhow cruise in Kisite you have a chance of seeing dolphins within the wasini channel.
COASTAL BEACH HOTELS
The long white sandy beaches are the home of some of the most diverse marine life in the ocean. The beautiful bright corals as well as dolphins, turtles and other various marine lives.
