Naro Moru/ Naro Moru Route

Although the least scenic of the three principle routes up the mountain, it is still likely to remain the most popular. Firstly it is the fastest route to Lenana and back if one has to walk in from the main road. Secondly both the Naromoru river lodge and offer walker’s excellent facilities in the form of equipment for hire porters and accommodation. The Mountain Rock Hotel is some 5km past Naromoru town and is a little less luxurious or costly, but the service is more personalized. Just past the township of Naromoru, turn right and follow signs for the national park. An all weather road leads through farmland and enters thick forest after about 12km. 5KM further you will reach the Park headquarters and entry gate, lying at 2,400m. From the track (closed in wet weather) continues for another 8km (in places steeply!) to the Met station at 3,000m. A four wheel drive vehicle is a good idea. The actual path up the mountain is impossible to miss; a wide swat of deep, soggy, trampled mud, well marked with painted stakes. One exits the forest at 3,150m after an hours walk, and there the “vertical bog” begins. Then, 2-3 hours after leaving the road head, the ground begins to firm up, and the tracks leans to the left to join the ridge at a good view point overlooking the Teleki valley.
